Gather and Sweet Pea's

It's hard to find a good consignment store. Either the stuff is too old and musty— like things dragged down from Grandma's attic—or the prices are not all that less than what you'd be paying for new. Which is why any woman or child, or better yet woman with child, should go immediately to the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and South Edmunds Street. Kitty corner from each other, you'll find both Gather and Sweet Pea's, two consignment stores selling women and children's clothing, respectively. Gather, just reopened as a clothing store after some time as an art gallery, carries chic clothing at shockingly low prices. A recent outing there netted two sundresses, one skirt, and one pair of shorts, all for $80. The store builds on the tradition established by Sweet Pea's, which has long sold adorable clothing (as well as toys and other items) at affordable prices. Can't get your tots excited about a shopping trip? Bribe them with a cookie from the Columbia City Bakery, next door to Gather.—Nina Shapiro
