Best Little Cafe That Could

Faire Gallery and Cafe

Walking into Faire Gallery & Cafe on the corner of Olive Way and Melrose Avenue feels like being on vacation—maybe you, maybe them. Unlike most morning-focused cafes, this one doesn't even open before 10:00 a.m. It fills up most in the evening, with live music much of the week and art on display that's a cut above the usual cafe fare. (Owner Elisheba Johnson is a Cornish grad.) Friends congregate in the loft for study groups, strangers interact, and when the people and tunes spill out into the city air, saying their hellos to every passerby, Faire has realized its mission. This cafe has become a community space, a place where different art forms and city dwellers mingle over wine (and soon spirits), and watch Top Chef on Wednesdays (when it's in season).—Maggie Savarino
