Best Waterfront Bocce

Eastlake Bouledrome

There are a lot of pleasant little secrets along Lake Union's eastern shore—pocket parks, houseboat communities—but none quite as exciting as the Eastlake Bouledrome on Fairview Avenue East. Yes, it's waterfront bocce! Well, technically pétanque. (Same principle: Winner pitches larger balls closest to small ball.) And the pleasingly landscaped, sanded court also has a bench for viewing and a metal scoreboard. The bouledrome was created by Eastlake residents and funded in part by the Department of Neighborhoods. It's a friendly spot, with a sign proclaiming that the game is "simple, relaxing, lots of fun, and a great way to make new friends." Couldn't agree more. The court is open year-round, but on a balmy summer evening you might have to wait your turn. Bring a picnic and your favorite soft beverage, and watch the lake sparkle while you warm up that arm.—Aimee Curl
