Best Vacation For Hoo-Hoo Liberals

Cascadian Farms

Many of us hoo-hoo liberals—who sit at our desks at lunchtime eating organic yogurt and pears—like to get righteous with the whole "you are what you eat" argument. But how many are familiar with the bigger question surrounding that argument: "Do you know what you eat?" Some Washington state farms have been catering to this nagging question by offering tours of their operations. Whether it's the multiple lavender-farm tours during Sequim's Lavender Days Festival or tours of Cascadian Farms in Rockport, each one offers an eye-opening look at what it takes to get your food into your mouth (hint: a lot more work than you'd think), and costs only a couple bucks, if anything at all. Personally, I highly recommend the free tour of Horse Drawn Farms on Lopez Island. Not only is the produce all organic, but the owner makes it his passion that all equipment be pulled by horses or oxen. Archaic? Yes. But also simple and enlightening.—Brian J. Barr
