Best Place to Talk Surf

Cheka Looka Surf Shop

Yes, we have surf in Washington, good surf. But if you think I'm going to tell you where it is, good luck, son, I'll just point you towards Westport. Same goes for Jeff Abandonato, the owner of Cheka Looka Surf Shop and resident Seattle shredder. Abandonato has one skill mandatory for all true surfers: He can bullshit for hours, and his employees have followed suit. On a recent sunny afternoon, Abandonato isn't around, but the clerk's "what up" is genuine, and the two other customers, obviously his buddies, take the time to introduce themselves. The store moved from its tiny digs on Eastlake about a year ago to a plush pad about thrice the size in Fremont. Now, the clerk says, there are periodic movie nights around the corner at the High Dive, where a surf movie or two is shown. Usually, an afterparty follows back at the store. It's a good time, I'm assured. And, oh yeah, they sell surfboards too.—Jesse Froehling
