Best Place to See Integration

42 bus

North-Enders think you can't find integration in this city. I say: head over to the South End. There's integration aplenty—has been for years—with a mix of whites, African-Americans, and every kind of immigrant you can think of. True, in terms of where they live, whites have tended to stick to the gold coast along Lake Washington. But as housing prices have skyrocketed, they've moved all over. To see this dynamic in play, take a ride on the 42 bus, which cuts through the heart of Rainier Valley along Martin Luther King Way. It once was rare to see a pale face on the 42. Not anymore. Whites commute along with everybody else to their homes in Rainier Vista or on Beacon Hill and nobody seems to find it a big deal.—Nina Shapiro
