Pacific Market

It's hard for me to understand a culture until I've tried its food, which is why a trip to the Persian Pacific Market in Lake City seemed necessary in these troubled political times. The market itself is a jumble of imported goods with inscrutable labels, but the attached deli is a delight. You won't have heard of most of the things on the menu, so take a chance with a few of them; do order the chicken fesenjan—chicken cooked to falling-off-the-bone tenderness and covered in a blanket of creamy walnut/pomegranate sauce. Yes, it's as good as it sounds. Take your order to go if you live nearby, or, for complete cultural immersion, stay and eat at one of the Formica tables while watching Persian TV.—Anna Roth
