Best Northwest Seattle Viking Bar

Baranof

The Viking on 24th Avenue Northwest is a fantastic bar, Old Ballard to the core. If the Baranof didn't exist, we'd have no trouble naming the Viking the Best Northwest Seattle Viking Bar, but the Baranof does exist, and, well, there's no place quite like the Baranof. When I think of the two qualities I most look for in a solid dive bar, I think of: (a) lack of pretentiousness and (b) combustibility (i.e., the potential for something unexpected and memorable to happen on any given night, and I'm not talking about getting laid by a stranger—although that never hurts). The Baranof, situated in the heart of downtown Greenwood, has it over just about every other bar in town when it comes to these attributes, and has surprisingly good food to go with 'em. The clientele is salty, the bartenders never leave, and you have to pass out or start a fistfight to get cut off (unless you pummel someone nobody likes, in which case your drinks are on the arm). This is what all bars with Norse monikers should aspire to be.—Mike Seely
