Hilltop Red Apple

Sure, the Hilltop Red Apple on Beacon Hill has recently undergone a remodel, adding items like fresh pasta to its spruced-up aisles. Even so, it remains a low-key, neighborhood kind of place, serving immigrants from all over the world, including refugees from Seattle's pricey North End. Unlike many stores in not-so-affluent neighborhoods, the produce is first-rate and bargains abound. When the QFC recently jacked up its price for Fuji apples to $2.50 a pound, you could find them at the Hilltop for $1.88. Mangos and avocados, staples in Southeast Asian and Latino cuisines respectively, also can be found at reasonable prices. And then there are the items you'll never find at the QFC, chief among them cheap, festive piñatas.—Nina Shapiro
