A pit stop is the only reason to brave the olfactory assault of the front-line trench known as the perfume counter of a department store. And it's especially worth it in the downtown Macy's ladies' room. Make it past the eau de somethings, and be sure to grab some devastatingly red lipstick and a powder compact to bask in the full effect. (Did you wear a full skirt and your kitten heels?) Take the elevator to the second floor, enter the ladies' room, and stand amid a cadre of sinks, circling your repeated image. The taupey pink color dominating the room could only have come from the late 1960's, but when they're mixed with the large globed lights lining each mirror, every complexion is perfect and everything looks good on you. The phrase "powder room" suddenly makes sense, and all you want to do is twirl round and round, like Maria in West Side Story. So why the hell don't the dressing rooms look like this?—Maggie Dutton
This item has been corrected to say that the restroom is on the second floor, not the fifth.
