Best Counterpart to Aurora

Lake City Way

When it comes to sleaze and kitsch, there's simply no matching Aurora Avenue. All the usual suspects appear at some point along the road: hookers, hustlers, watering holes, grow houses, strip malls, bang-tail motor inns, big-box stores, fast food, arcane repair shops, emporiums of erotica—the gang's all there. It's there on Lake City Way, too, albeit for a shorter stretch of road and not as conspicuously. Ditto 15th Avenue Northwest. But whereas 15th only has one-and-a-half strip joints (Centerfold's is running on fumes and has male dancers who cater exclusively to straight women; might be time to rethink that premise in one of the gayest cities on the planet), Lake City Way has two. And while the T-Bird and Waterwheel on 15th have plenty to offer in the roadhouse department, Lake City Way's Rose Garden and Rimrock will blow your mind. Both roads boast their fair share of obscure throwback merchants, but the preponderance of auto dealerships and timepiece repairmen in Lake City put that thoroughfare over the top for what is ostensibly a grimy runner-up trophy to Aurora, the perennial mold standard for seedy urbanity.—Mike Seely
