David Stoesz

A few months ago, one of our contributing writers, David Stoesz, wrote a caustic and mean-spirited article called “I Hate You, Visual Art,” in which he ridiculed actual, professional, working artists like Fay Jones and set himself up as some sort of arbiter of what is actual art and what is simply decorative fancy or pretentious bullshit (as if such a line can be drawn). Now this same writer is inviting people to come see his own art show, “Redmond” (through Oct. 5), an exhibit of photography that purports to find some kind of profundity in the eight-lane-arterialed, manicured tedium that is the city of Redmond. He additionally promises “a grid of nine resin blocks embedded with photos that are stapled on little notebooks.” Stoesz may be attempting to insulate himself from attack with a sheen of self-satire, but I hope and expect that the Seattle art scene’s exquisitely honed bullshit detectors will not allow him to get away with that.
