KC Chiefs Fans Back On Top As No. 1 Loudmouths

Take a seat, 12th Man, Arrowhead Stadium has resumed its rightful place as the loudest -- and some might say (see SW’s Matt Driscoll’s story on whining 49ers fans) -- obnoxious football palace in all the land.

Yesterday, Kansas City Chiefs fans, their lungs on steriods, broke the world record for an outdoor sports stadium. They did it, god love ‘em, in the final minutes of their 24-7 win over Oakland, when they reached 137.5 decibels.

An official from Guinness World Records told The Associated Press confirmed that the Chiefs crowd of 76,394 screaming banshees surpassed the record of 136.6 set by Seahawks fans during a game against hated rival San Francisco on the evening of Sept. 15.

“I had people who’d been coming to Chiefs games for decades come up to me and say, ‘I’ve never heard it that loud,’” said Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt, whose family’s franchise has long claimed that Arrowhead Stadium is the loudest in the league. “It’s very difficult for a team to play in that.”

Of course, we’re sure none of this is going down well among the 12th man crowd, who now have two weeks -- while the Seahawks hit the road to Arizona and St. Louis -- to get its game lungs on for their next chance to recapture Guinness glory, against the woeful Tampa Bay Bucs on Nov. 3.
