Storefronts Seattle

Among the nine new installations in the second iteration of Storefronts Seattle—the program designed to enliven vacant retail spaces with art and art-inspired projects—is a series of peek-a-boo apertures created by Ben Zamora and Etta Lilienthal called Portal (409 Maynard Ave. S.). They’re dual-purpose, creating visual intrigue while measuring the interruption of light caused by passersby. Elsewhere, Mathew Richter shows his handcrafted wood furniture at 610 Second Ave. Celeste Cooning’s cut-paper collages range in size from intimate to installation-scale (A Brighter Day, 501 Maynard Ave. S.). James Barker shows a 3-D painting called Metal Land at 312 Occidental Ave. S. Paul McKee will develop individual works for windowpanes (Rosetta Glass, 409 Maynard Ave. S., lower level). In the basement at the Tashiro-Kaplan Building (Yesler Way and Third Ave. S.), Tom Maul and Robert Hutchison muse on connection and communication via two empty tin cans strung together. See if they talk to you. ADRIANA GRANT
