“Faith cannot be everywhere.” That is one of the lessons that Doubt teaches. John Patrick Shanley’s play takes place in a 1950s Catholic school in the Bronx, specifically in the principal’s office. Taproot’s set design really evokes what it must have been like to be a child sent there—an almost-too-small cage, wooden furniture, and nothing to distract you from the stern Sister on the other side of the desk. Set against a dazzling blue-sky backdrop, the script’s starkness and simplicity shine through. The same can be said for the performances, each actor clearly investing their personal beliefs in their roles. The result is that your faith in the characters must be carefully considered as the truth becomes less tangible. Doubt presents a sugarless lesson on a subject that still affects us.
