You.May.Die.In.The.Desert is an instrumental rock band that doesn’t simply fill in the slow build-up template that defines many within the genre. Instead, they throw you right into the mix, with creative start and end points, and delicate interplay in between. The local three-piece sounds genuinely fascinated by the possibilities that each song presents, and set out with a Swiss Army skill set and a painter’s eye at each track mark. The results are adventurous, and always intelligent, and when they do fall into a discernible build-up routine (as on “Monolith”), they crush it with rare force. With Piano Piano, Levator. TODD HAMM
