Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Steve Martin stars with the late John Candy in this warm, sentimental 1987 holiday road movie by John Hughes. Candy is particularly sweet and sad at as the schlub whom Martin's Yuppie can't get rid of. Their pratfalls and antics are fueled by the universal American hatred of modern travel—the rude clerks, Byzantine airports, and off-ramps to nowhere. (And this before the TSA.) It's treacly, like any John Hughes movie, but the taste will be right for many viewers this time of the year. Call for showtimes. (R) BRIAN MILLER
