Talib Kweli and Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey) were he two most prominent lyricists to emerge from the Rawkus Records-bred New York conscious rap renaissance, and in 1998 they came together on record as Black Star. Their insightful, graduate-level rhymes effectively created an intelligent alternative to the often less-thought-provoking materialistic rap of the late ’90s/early ’00s.
