The 24-year-old British singer Ellie Goulding has all the physical makings of a pop star—she’s blonde, has an airy, glamorous voice, likes to wear sparkles. Fortunately, she’s also a talented songwriter. Some of the songs on Goulding’s debut full-length, last year’s Bright Lights, reveal her beginnings as an acoustic guitar-playing singer/songwriter, but the more exciting songs are her forays into electronic synth-pop—the ecstatically Autotuned “Starry Eyed,” the breathless and sexy “Lights” (the Bassnectar remix of that song is even more thrilling). The tunes are busy, beat-happy, and club-ready, and Goulding is a highly spirited and sensual performer—the slow emotions of folk music never would have been able to contain her level of dynamic energy for long.
