The latest Sun Kil Moon record, the lovely and gently rhythmic Admiral Fell Promises, is actually just Mark Kozelek singing with his nylon string guitar. But the distinctions between Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters, and Kozelek’s solo recordings are inconsequential, since the starring feature of all three projects has always been Kozelek’s famously melancholy, soul-searing vocals and his tranquil and eloquent presence as a performer. For past records, Kozelek’s used his home state of Ohio, the songs of Modest Mouse, and his deceased ex-girlfriend as inspirations for his richly evocative tunes; Admiralis his exploration of classical guitar as well as a personal travelogue of sorts, with songs referencing California’s Half Moon Bay and the intersection of Third and Seneca here in Seattle.
