Cool Hand Luke

From 1967, Cool Hand Luke is, for my money, the best prison movie ever made. Newman stars as the prisoner who won't be broken. His egg eating scene is a classic bit of short comedy. George Kennedy (very enjoyable), Dennis Hopper, Harry Dean Stanton, and Wayne Rogers are among his fellow inmates. But it was supporting actor Strother Martin who got the role of a lifetime with his "What we've got here is failure to communicate" prison guard. Movie screens at midnight. (NR) BRIAN MILLLER
