Opening Nights: Legally Blonde

A big pink pep rally.

A two-hour pep rally filled with saccharine-sweet pop, singing sorority sisters, and plenty of pink clothes, Blonde is like an overeager puppy—so damn cute that you smile rather than roll your eyes. If you liked the movie, you’ll love the show. If not, well, you really have no business being here.

Becky Gulsvig stars as Elle Woods, the Malibu-bred sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III, after he tells her he wants someone “less Marilyn, more Jackie.” Gulsvig’s Disney-princess voice is perfect for belting out silly numbers like “Ohmigod You Guys.” Her sorority sisters are even funnier, delivering one-liners like “She’s eating Milky Ways!” and “Uh-oh, tell me those are fun-sized!” with ditsy enthusiasm.

The more ridiculous the characters, the greater the applause. On opening night, the biggest laughs were for Elle’s well-meaning but, er, slow hairdresser Paulette (Natalie Joy Johnson) and her crush, a hunky UPS delivery man (Ven Daniel) who hams it up by bending over or flexing his biceps at every opportunity. Elle’s Chihuahua Bruiser inspired oohs and awws with his well-timed barking and trotting across the stage, but personally I thought his performance came off as studied and affected. My Chihuahua is a far better actor.
