Lethal Weapon

Remember when Mel Gibson wasn't an anti-Semitic Jesus freak with a penchant for drunk driving and directing gory history movies? The year 1987 is long distant, but this is the film (after The Road Warrior) that made Gibson a star in the U.S. A suicidal L.A. cop partnered with affable Danny Glover, Gibson ends up battling South African baddies with crazy-eyed insouciance. The movie is pure comedy/action formula, but the formula works very well. Richard Donner directs, beginning a franchise that lasted too long into the '90s. This is the best of the batch, projected in 70mm. (R) BRIAN MILLER
