At one time the drummer for a manic band called Agitpop that toured with the Minutemen (he still corresponds with Mike Watt), Poughkeepsie, N.Y., native Mark LaFalce, 47, now pursues painting with his 1980s-style DIY enthusiasm undiminished. Working from the memory of countless daily vignettes framed by the windshield of the Metro bus he drives by day ("it's like a movie screen"), he paints Seattle as a gritty wonderland heaving with cars and people rushing in all directions on roads that intersect at impossible angles. Fantastic elements—airplanes illuminating the tops of swaying high-rises—mix freely with the realistically rendered details of drainage grates and power lines. LaFalce— who's shown his work at cafes and restaurants all over the city—isn't offended by the suggestion that his paintings look like vintage children's-book illustrations. He even has his own children's-book project "on a burner somewhere." His current show, "You Are Here," is mostly watercolors, which seem to be what he does best, but also includes oils and framed relief pieces using found objects. He'll be at the gallery every Saturday through the end of the month to field questions about the Agitpop reunion and, if you ask nicely, explain Metro's two-zone off-peak transfer policy.
