Hotel bars are often underutilized places for locals to drink. Most of us only frequent them while we’re traveling, and miss out on hidden gems within our midst. The bar at The Hunt Club inside First Hill’s Sorrento Hotel is one of those places that shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s full of old-school charm and charisma, stiff drinks, and a slightly stiffer decor—but don’t let that scare you away. There’s something about the place that seems straight out of a Cary Grant movie from the ’40s, but that’s part of its allure. It’s also got a solid happy-hour deal after 9 p.m.: microbrews for $3.50, wells for $4, and a discounted food menu to stop you from getting too drunk too quickly. I opted for sliders and fries and wanted to wash them down with a Blue Moon, but since they were out I ordered a Hefeweizen instead. Just west of the bar is the Fireside Room, featuring live music a few nights a week. Local singer/songwriter Tess Henley and her brother Carson were performing on a recent Tuesday night, rocking out covers of Marvin Gaye, India.Arie, and Jamiroquai along with original material. By 9:30 (after happy hour commenced), the place was full of people—tourists and locals—enjoying the music.
