The Leon Hendrix Experience

Being Jimi’s baby brother can be a tough row to hoe, especially if you wield an axe.

On November 6, several famous guitarists—Buddy Guy, Mike McCready, Jonny Lang, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd among them—took the stage at the opulent Paramount Theatre, trading porn licks in front of a sold-out crowd. The concert marked the Seattle stop of an annual Jimi Hendrix tribute tour organized by Janie Hendrix, who controls a large share of her late stepbrother's estate through an enterprise called Experience Hendrix.

More About

Conspicuously absent from the concert, which also featured former Hendrix collaborators Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox, was Jimi's younger brother, Leon. As the show began, Leon could be found rehearsing with his band in a small practice space underneath the Red Door in Fremont. Leon wasn't invited to the Paramount gig, as he's been on the outs with Janie for years, the result of an epic legal struggle over the rights to Jimi's lucrative legacy—a struggle that's found Leon on the losing end time and again.

A week earlier, on Halloween: Leon and his band are sharing a bill at the Imperial Dragon, a cavernous restaurant-lounge in Tacoma, with a group fronted by Goldy McJohn, the former keyboard player for Steppenwolf and the Mynah Birds. McJohn lives in Burien, and was once tight with both Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, who died within days of each other in 1970.

Despite its emphasis on Asian fare, tonight the Dragon is offering a $2 hot dog special in the banquet room where Leon and McJohn are to perform. In the lounge, there's another stage, where a classic-rock cover band is playing to a sparse crowd. The banquet room is slightly more crowded, albeit mostly with members of the bands and a handful of groupies.

The promoter of the gig is a large man in a bejeweled cowboy hat named Jim Nelson. Back when he was "three-quarters fucked up and had a beautiful blonde wife," Nelson claims, he performed regularly at the Las Vegas Hilton, where he sang his "road song, 'Johnny B. Goode.'" Tonight, he says, he'll be performing that song with Leon's band.

"Have you seen the flyer? Have you seen it?" Nelson asks excitedly. "The flyer" is Nelson's main method for promoting this Halloween show. He claims he's handed them out and plastered them all over town, as well as at a pair of nearby military bases. He believes flyers are more effective than newspaper advertising and just about any other promotional tactic. "People keep them," he says. "That's how I promote my bands."

Judging from the lackluster crowd that's assembled shortly before Leon and his band take the stage, however, the flyer appears not to have worked as Nelson had hoped. McJohn, for one, is incensed that Nelson has promoted his Steppenwolf cover band (in which McJohn's the only original member), Goldy McJohn & Friendz, as the actual Steppenwolf. "[Nelson] is full of shit," says McJohn. "Steppenwolf would never play a room like this." McJohn, who speaks deliberately and boasts a long, gray mane of hair, hands over a self-released solo CD entitled Fugue in D, which he describes—aptly, it turns out—as "59 minutes and 23 seconds of backwards, forwards, pure, uninterrupted psychedelia."

Leon is rail-thin, with stringy hair and massive hands to rival Jimi's, and wears tinted spectacles at all times. He is dressed in a long leopard-print robe, open to reveal a T-shirt bearing his brother's likeness that he designed himself. He and his band, a four-piece, take the stage and launch into "Red House," followed by a string of hard-rock originals from the band's lone LP, Keeper of the Flame. After finishing a track entitled "Voodoo River," Leon points to the sky and exclaims, "Thank you, Jimi. What's up, brother?"

The band plays a handful of other Jimi covers, including "All Along the Watchtower" and "Hey, Jimi," a lyric-tweaked interpretation of "Hey, Joe." Leon mainly plays rhythm guitar, but occasionally trades solos with Stefen Isaac, the band's competent lead guitarist. Like his brother, Leon, who sings lead, is not the greatest vocalist, his gravelly voice spitting out lyrics at such a frantic rate that they're often unintelligible. As a guitarist, he shows flashes of ingenuity, but mostly defers to Isaac.

"Johnny B. Goode" is the band's finale, and Nelson, as promised, strides to the stage. Leon reluctantly cedes the microphone to the promoter, who hunches and sways from left to right as he sings. After a verse and a chorus, an unimpressed Leon pushes Nelson off the stage and finishes the song himself.

"That was a bullshit thing, I'm tellin' you," says Nelson, reflecting on the incident weeks later. "Leon's a great singer, but he doesn't sing that song worth a shit. He's a class act, but he's not a rock-and-roll singer." That said, adds Nelson, "His brother's name gives him the inside track, and the guy's good."

Leon says his band received "a check for $18" for performing that night. Nelson chalks this up in part to the fact that the musicians were signing drinks to his tab without permission, and concedes "I don't think they got paid shit."

Now 61, Leon's become accustomed to getting the short end of the stick. A former drug addict and small-time crook, Leon was famously cut out of his father's will—and in turn, Jimi's estate—before Al Hendrix's death in 2002. A costly legal battle, in which Leon claimed his stepsister Janie coerced a sickly Al into shunning him financially, ensued. It was a battle Leon would ultimately lose in 2004, and subsequent attempts to profit from his brother's legacy have been quashed in court as well.

Came across this via Wiki article on Jimi. A well written article followed by some interesting comments (and some awful ones too). What a sad story. Whatever Leon might have done, he has shown real courage of late. To learn guitar in his 50s and go on stage is impressive. How many people learn anything NEW after the age of 25? And he is a real link to Jimi. Brothers are more likely to be similar than father/son because brothers have more similar environments. A serious Jimi fan should WANT to see Leon because he is as close as anyone will ever be to Jimi. I can accept that Leon may have sold, lost etc his right to a share in the trust. This may be fact and the law. But laws are not morals. The trust could look after his kids etc anyway. They could help him anyway. The decision not to is their CHOICE. If the article is correct, then their choice not to is deplorable.

Leon didn't lose in court because he signed away all of his rights to Jimis estate, like someone mentioned here. He was still in the will after he sold away his rights to a music company, which he thought was his father's wish. In fact, Leon and his children were always in the will, until Janie got complete control of the company. Janie retained certified public accountant, Tim Jorstad, to perform estate planning services for Al and to consult regarding the tax liability created by the settlement. Shortly after his retention, Jorstad was informed that Leon was not Al's biological son. This information was apparently provided to Jorstad by Janie during a dinner meeting in California.(why she started this rumor? Why was this so important to her, while she herself was not a real daughter of Al?) Janie also expressed concern that Leon would sell reversionary copyrights which did not belong to him and cause problems for the estate. In October of 1995, Janie, Robert and Jorstad discussed obtaining a blood sample from Al for DNA testing. (again...what's the point of all of this?) Jorstad also recommended that Al prepare a written statement regarding Leon's paternity and that Al visit a doctor to have the doctor affirm that Al had sufficient mental capacity to sign such a statement Janie corresponded with Jorstad from August of 1995 until approximately April of 1996 regarding Al Hendrix's estate planning. During that time, Jorstad only met with Al Hendrix once, on January 27, 1997. When questioned about Jorstad during a deposition approximately one year later on February 10, 1998, Al could not remember who Jorstad was. In 1996 Al wrote a new will. It did away with the concept of a family owned and run company and in essence gave complete control of the Hendrix companies to Janie and Robert. In the early versions of this plan, including those explained to Janie in 1996, Leon and his children were to have a 24% interest held in trust. So here Leon and his children were still in the will. Al always kept Leon in all of the wills he had written in all these years.

I PRAY that you, JAMES MMMMHHHAAAA come to a Leon Hendrix Mysterience show and reveal yourself. What fun will ensue. Logic is absent from some of these posts. The camp that thinks Leon deserves no more inheritance says his music sucks. The camp that thinks Leon deserves a bigger slice of the pie says he is pretty talented, and artistic, too. I don't see the relevance that his level of talent has to his legal and moral right to share the estate. In other words, even if he is just average with the guitar, that should not disqualify him from coming into some big money. -Steve

I saw the article of Leon in Seattle Weekly, and I have to say it seemed pretty one-sided, bias, in a way against Leon. I like what what Stefen Issac said, but Charles Cross, and of course Janie and even some of what the reporter replies to, it didn't satisfy me that much because it didn't show the good things about Leon, not just as the younger brother of an icon, but as an individual person who once took in children and has helped and inspired people as well as myself. His friendliness, he doesn't just see me or anyone else as crazy fans of his brother, but as people who he appreciates.

  • Brian 03/20/2009 9:30:00 AM

Yet another example of how fucked up the mentality of Seattlites has become with regards to their local musicians. If it isn't someone making a snide remark about the Fleet Foxes saying they will never sign to a major label, it's cutting down the efforts of brother to the most amazing talent to come out of Seattle. The venues are disappearing here, the crowds are usually ice cold to obscure bands and there are too many jaded "artists" here to count. What happened to a city that had a healthy music community only 10 or 15 years ago? I still have faith that this city will turn things around, and I can postpone my plans to move to Austin. I like Seattle's climate and the outlying environment a lot, so moving would suck, but the so-called music scene is due for a major attitude adjustment. As for Leon, man, no offense, but if it was not for the fact that you are Jimi's bro, you probably wouldn't get a front page story in the SW. Granted the article may have some errors, but with the complexity of your situation, that is to be expected. Just be thankful you got any coverage. Any press is good press. The best way you can shut all the naysayers up is to prove them wrong by your stage performance. The proof in in the puddin' my friend. I love your brother's work, and respect you for wanting to carry on his legacy, but don't whine. Would Jimi whine? No, he'd be in the studio right now creating his new cosmic sounds and speak through his music. Just stop bitching about the people putting you down, and get on with concerning yourself with your band. Sometimes actions speak volumes louder than words. Peace, BK

"Who are all the "no name" vipers that keep writing in to snipe so hard? Better yet, why?" Everyone who read these nasty comments understand that these are written as a provocation, to create a stir. Just ignore it. It's attention that they want, even if it's negative attention. Don't forget that these are comments from anonymous people, or maybe even from one and the same person, they probably wouldn't say the same things face to face. Everyone is entitled to have and to express his or her opinion, but to try to put someone down, only tells something about themselves not about the other.

First of all, Jimi is one of my very favorite guitarists/writers...although short-lived, his gifts to us were amazing...now,as for Janie, wasn't this chick about 8 yrs old when her 'step-brother' or 'half-brother' died? Does she even know what he was about? Sure, she is doing a good thing(debatable)for 'her' family and keeping the Hendrix legacy in the forefront, but who gets the 'proceeds'? Yes, that part about the drinks is really strange. Isn't it so that bandmembers never have to pay for their drinks when they perform? At least that's how it is in the Netherlands.

To whom it may concern, from wherever you pour in from ~ I wished to work with Leon Hendrix having learned of him after Experience Hendrix had me in the running with their record label Hendrix Records and closed that wing of the company altogether. My logic after recording with Jimi's engineer Eddie Kramer in 1996, was to keep making music that had meaning with people that it meant everything to. Incidentally, I met Leon in 2000 and it took 4 years until I ended up moving to Seattle by way of Chicago. It was a year after that, that I considered playing in the band after playing a solo on "Flight 93" to help the guys finish off the "Keeper Of The Flame" album. All that went so well that they asked me to do the album cover! It was after the album was pressed that they asked me to join them performing the song I played on the album live. From there it was a case of, would you play all the other songs we do? I did this all for the last 4 years having made about $350.00. We have the tax return to prove it. Notice thats singular, not plural. RETURN. Actually, in my case I made $20.00 less than the other guys and didnt have to file but still have the paperwork. Case & Point- Ive not done any of this for money, I did it because MUSICALLY it was the mother of all music scenarios that was just screwed from every angle and I was certain that with persistance we could make change occur for Leon and his family while having a great time doing it for a great cause and Leon, whom we see the good in after a life of many many mistakes made. Neil and Mark feel the same way too. We love all of them. We've not come along trying to "get rich". Leon may feel that way trying to get all of that going for his kids because he lost so much along the way. We have all come together for those special musical moments *when it all clicks* and we just trance into the song pinning it down where the room feels like its spinning and the audience is caught up in the rocknroll hurricane. There is no way to describe launching into All Along The Watchtwower the way The Leon Hendrix Mysterience can do it and not get that special electricity cycling through your veins. Jimi wouldve been supportive of Leon's venture into playing music and nobody in Heaven or on Earth can tell me otherwise. A great story about Jimi heading to the studio sites him as being recognized by the driver and him mentioning he played congas. Well, Jimi had the conga player come to the studio later and people there were like WTF???? Surely, Leon's musical aspiration wouldnt have been frowned on by his brother who looked to inspire the world to be better human beings and love at all costs. Obviously, the people writing totally useless comments here dont know us, will never know us and only wish to hurt someone. Well, you all missed your mark. Im writing in because I dont have to write in as someone else. For the record, we are a PROFESSIONAL BAND that does NOT charge drinks against our pay for the night. The article opens with the useless "promoter" that nobody in the band ever met before stating we drank our pay. I just have to laugh, I personally do NOT perform professionally while impaired. I save beer time for AFTER we play. Thanks for your consideration, JYPSYEYE@hotmail.com Stefen Isaac

Big applause for "yougotta be-kiddin"!!! You are so very clever. No one can fool you, now can they? So stupid that we didn't think about that option. Of course...everything positive about the band must have been written by themselves.....right? Dream on

I've heard tracks from "Keeper Of The Flame" & some videos on YouTube (which don't really do them justice), I think these guys are a good band" WTF???????????????? So leon or his court jesters are reduced to writing even more things about themselfs and still pretending that it's some one else????????? mmmmmmmhhhhhaaaa mmmmhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I would like to chime in with my point of view & say it's great that Leon Hendrix decided to express his creativity & play guitar as well as do his visual art (which I would love to see, I don't believe I've seen that yet). It's always better late than never. I didn't get serious about playing until I was 21, but now I'm 52 & have a lot of playing, working with bands, engineering & recording experience behind me & I've also learned some other instruments. I couldn't have done this if I had listened to all the selfish relatives & nasty ill-tempered people who would never give me a chance, they would have killed my flame if I had taken them to heart. I started out as a visual artist myself, among other things. For those who live in glass houses, who is perfect in this world? Nobody. So someone may have things in their past that aren't so great, would not want to repeat, though we have all done some different things, we are all in that boat one way or another. Who is anyone to throw the rocks of reproach at another, especially when they have taken a direction for the better? We live in a sick culture when people try to downgrade someone for doing something good, or even trying to. How about someone else knowing your real identity & throwing mud at your name because of what they heard about your past? The terms of use here are against making remarks to insult or defame someone's character, by the way- I read them because many of the posts here looked too nasty & spiteful. Don't like the music or who's making it? Move on & forget it, you don't have to be involved. There was no "constructive" criticism expressed in the gratuitously nasty remarks. I've been a fan of Leon & his band ever since I heard things from his lead guitarist Stefan Isaac in 2004 & 2005. I've heard tracks from "Keeper Of The Flame" & some videos on YouTube (which don't really do them justice), I think these guys are a good band, & would like to see them in my area. I know other people here would also like the chance. I also sincerely hope there is a better follow-up article to this one. It wasn't all bad, I learned a lot, but it could have been more comprehensive.

  • Jenny 03/09/2009 3:50:00 AM

How about this.... SEND THE LEON HENDRIX MYSTERIENCE TO US IN THE NETHERLANDS!!! We would love to have him. No one is perfect and Leon cleaned up his act. Think about it....what if OUR past lives would be described in a public article like this? Would it make a nice picture of ourselves? I don't have a clean past....have you? If you point your finger at someone, remember there are 3 more pointing at you! Give the man a fuckin' chance!!!

This must be from Leon or one of the other 2 'musicians' in his 'group'. This is really sad to have to write this type of dribble and pretend you are someone else writing from another country, but it just seems to fit everything the article says about him and his court jesters. mmmhhaaa, mmmhhaaaaaaa

  • Whomp 03/08/2009 1:40:00 AM

I can't knock Leon for having a dream and all, but I also had the unpleasant experience of actually hearing him and his band play live back in 2002 at EMP, opening for Randy Hanson, and it was painful, to say the least. Leon can't sing (he sort of growls) and his guitar playing skills were non-existent. On some level, you sort of feel sorry for the guy, but he's pissed away millions of dollars from his Dad and the estate over the years and his treatment of his children is just sad. Leon still may have something worthwhile to give the world, but it sure isn't his music.

  • Just another crackhead... 03/07/2009 1:02:00 PM

What this article does not portray is what a slimy creature Leon always was and probably still is: a loathsome man that screwed over his family and children with his addictions and egotistical self-centered behavior. A man who is known by most as a pimp, liar, thief and crack addict and even if he actually quit crack (which I doubt) he is still the pimp, liar and thief. We heard about daughter Tina lets hear from son Alex and the other four kids about dear old Dad huh? The fact he is a liar was made clear in the article and his attempts to be a musician is the pimp at work the puppet pimp whose strings are pulled by his fellow pimps and hustlers like Dieffenbach. Greg Groeper was right on the money with his assessment of Leon being advised by the pimps and hustlers and he was also dead-on correct in seeing what Leon is quite capable of: being a visual artist. Leon draws some amazing shit and is as talented a visual artist as Jimi was with a guitar but the pimps and hustlers dont want to work that angle because they dont want an artist, they want a rock n roller. If he put his work on canvas hed be famous. As far as the riff with Janey if you failed to read in the article that he signed away all of his rights to Jimis estate (which is why he always loses in court) Then be assured that any animosity toward Leon from th rest of the clan is likely due to his just plain old being a pimp, liar and thief. He had many more chances than anyones been told and he squandered every single one. If Leon manages to tame the pimp, liar, thief and drug addict inside and decides to become a visual artist with paintbrush in hand; then life for Leon and his family will finally change for the better

Leon is a cool cat. Check out the Song Mission For Momma on his myspace page. I love his music, but if you don't, well maybe this style is just not your genre of rock. I liked the story, but if Leon says it's no good, he's the boss. Nah, just joking.. Sure, maybe there was a mistake here and there, but it was one of the better stories I have read around this town in a long time. Music stories that are 6 pages long are not easy to write, so I would give Mike Seely the benefit of the doubt, If I were Leon Hendrix, who I am not, but maybe in the next life. I know I will be seeing Leon live again, next chance I get. But, that's just me. I am a fan of all things Hendrix. Maybe a follow up story would be helpful, and we could get some more Leon and Jimi Hendrix info, while we are at it.

For those of us who have had the privilege to have seen and met Leon this article seems to talk a lot about people unassociated with the band while missing entirely the warmth and heart of the man. Id invite everyone to go to a show and see for themselves what a presence the man has.

Janie "Hendrix" has NO semblance of what FAMILY is, Seattle people think their sh** doesnt stink laughing off a band that has done more to keep MUSICAL respect the point verses the law suits. Whomever the comedians are with the hot dog comments, you are pathetic. Send the Leon Hendrix Mysterience to ENGLAND!!! We WILL take them in and show them around EUROPE, we love them on myspace and so does everyone else internationally. Just like Jimi, you people would kiss this bands ass once they make it over here out of reverence and respect to Jimi and return to your shores as a group of rocknroll ambassadors to Jimi's legacy. We loved Jimi FIRST!!!!! We are ready for Leon and willing to do it again!!!!!! Seattle, you ought to be ashamed for not supporting your own. You have the patriarch of the Hendrix family who's made a lot of mistakes in your midst and you trade him off for a step-sister who met Jimi 3 times thats glossed over a sibliing rivalry scenario behind closed legal doors. Yet, you claim to be HOME OF ROCKNROLL in your own right, you must all have collective selective amnesia when you think ROCKNROLL is about being flawless and not making massive mistakes in life with no comeback. Leon is the ulitimate underdog and we LOVE HIM & HIS BAND HERE IN LONDON! You people are smarter than that or are you not, but hey, in a tanking economy who has time to care about another mans trials.

Seattle isnt worth of even having this band in their town. SEND THE LEON HENDRIX MYSTERIENCE TO US IN ENGLAND!!!! WE WILL TAKE THEM IN LIKE WE DID JIMI !!!!!

Well, Leon has more than money could ever buy... He has Jimi's love and his genetics. There's not another artist alive that is blessed with having Jimi as his sibling. Leon knows that his brother was exceptional and makes no promises to ever achieve the level that Jimi did. It might have taken awhile, but Leon is coming to personally appreciate just how hard Jimi had to work in order to get where he did. Leon's trek has covered a lot of ground, but I think it is safe to say, he is finally listening to the muse, and it shows. Let's hope that he can help make a diffrence in other peoples lives.

  • 03/04/2009 9:24:00 PM

Leon should definitely get apiece of the Jimi estate. That's crap!
