Moonstruck

Cher finally won her Oscar as the widow in love in this 1987 romantic comedy, ably directed by Norman Jewison from a very grounded-in-Brooklyn script by John Patrick Shanley (Doubt). If Moonstruck finally proved (to some) that Cher could actually, you know, act, it was also a revelation to those who hadn't noticed Nicolas Cage before. As the younger partner in Cher's May-December romance, he managed to preserve his lunatic intensity while also proving he could be, yes, a leading man. In support, and very nearly stealing the film, are expert character actors Danny Aiello, John Mahoney, Vincent Gardenia, and Olympia Dukakis. Perfectly cast, the very enjoyable movie washes down excellently with a bottle of wine and a big plate of pasta. (PG) BRIAN MILLER
