Macho Cheese: Group Show

Only a certain type of man can unblinkingly order a quad shot soy latte with extra foam and two Splendas. Arnold Schwarzenegger and David Hasselhoff aren’t among those men. But they, and many of their macho counterparts, are featured on the walls of tiny coffee shop Joe Bar this month. “Macho Cheese” (through December 31) revisits the over-the-top media portrayals of men and masculinity so prevalent in the ’70s and ’80s. More than a dozen local artists have contributed their cheeky interpretations, which are filled with images of dinosaurs, Firebirds, enormous biceps, and handlebar mustaches. These images may elicit snickers from most patrons. But one piece that didn’t make me laugh was a rendering of Tom Selleck. Because, in secret, I still think the dude’s sort of dreamy.
