Brothers and Sisters is an Austin based six-piece that plays indie rock combined with a mix of AM sunshine pop and disco. Their second full-length, Fortunately, is an oldie/indie hybrid that harkens back to Simon and Garfunkel, the Byrds and ABBA. Brothers and Sisters’ songs usually lean more towards tradition than experimentation, and nostalgia is a guiding force in their work, instrumentally and lyrically (see song titles: “You’re Gone,” “Old Love Letters” and “Without You”). However, on Fortunately, the band brings out some heavier sounds than those on their previous self-titled album. Likewise, lighter folk songs like “Can’t Hold Me Back,” are illuminated with solid pedal steel work and thick vocal harmonies, making for a more personalized interpretation of these ’60s styles. Also playing is Seattle’s Night Canopy, another example of past meets present in the silky ballads of Amy Blaschke. Now that Blaschke is playing solo, the show is just as much about what she says as how she says it, so please, do us all a favor: Shut the fuck up and listen to her lyrics.
