Earshot Jazz Festival

Always the pinnacle of the year for lovers of creative instrumental music, the three-week Earshot Jazz Festival (through Nov. 9) annually gives a smash in the mouth to morons who say jazz is dead. You’d have to be six feet under yourself not to find something compelling among the 50 shows curated by Earshot director John Gilbreath. With a deep and wide view of the music, he books players who cover every variety of jazz and jazz-aligned sound, with a focus on excellence, not trendiness. Giants like Cecil Taylor, emerging players, and hardworking, creative veterans who’ll never make it onto the KPLU playlist all find a place in the lineup, along with a select cut from the finest Seattle-based players.
