The Secret of Roan Inish

John Sayles' 1994 family film is based on an Irish fable about a Selkie, a mythological creature that is part human and part seal. Set in a small fishing village on the blustery Donegal coast, Roan Inish focuses on two intertwining stories. Onc concerns a young girl convinced that her baby brother, who drifted out to sea a few years before, has been kept alive and raised by seals. The other is a sad, evocative tale of a man who had the mixed fortune of falling in love with a Selkie. (PG) TOM KEOGH
