Al Green

Friday, September 5

At one point during his interview with writer Matt Rogers, published in issue number 28 of Wax Poetics magazine, Al Green asks the hapless reporter, "Do I act normal to you?" Rogers provides a safe, if slippery, answer. But those who read the accompanying Q&A with The Roots drummer/mastermind Questlove—producer of Green’s latest album, Lay It Down—know that Green's not-quite rhetorical question lends credence to Questlove's assertion that the making of the album "took almost three years, because Al's tough, man." Who among us thought the poisoned bloom of a genius like Green's would be anything but difficult? The good Reverend Al has been practicing his seductive brand of musical religion—delivered unto him by a thousand horny angels—on many a woman both seen and never glimpsed for many magical moons. It's a gift that would make anyone crazy.
