Many years ago, I went to a Metallica show at an amphitheatre in Bumfuck, Indiana, and god-damn it was loud. So loud that a few days later, when someone I knew said they'd heard that the immense volume had whipped scores of animals at a nearby farm into such a frenzy that they'd hurled themselves into a fence and crushed themselves to death, this completely ridiculous story almost seemed plausible. I can say with absolute certainty, however, that no farm animal within a half-mile of a Jucifer gig stands a chance of surviving – nor will your hearing, if you go sans earplugs (and even with them, you might be fucked). This long-running noise-rock/indie-metal two-piece - singer-guitarist Amber Valentine and drummer Edgar Livengood - doesn't set up its giant wall of amplifiers onstage merely for show: It's there to create a level of volume known to shake paint off walls, loosen internal organs, knock the wind out of you, and get Jucifer booted out of clubs (they had the plug pulled on 'em for excessive loudness at a Brooklyn joint in July). Planting yourself directly in front of this aural firepower is sorta like parachuting off an antenna tower or eating a live scorpion - to most people it's madness, but for the extreme, Jucifer's a total rush.
