Depending on your generational perspective, 2008 is a good time to ask your parents, or tell your kids, about the watershed political year of 1968. Then, as now, a war was raging, Israel was under siege, the economy was volatile, and the dominant party’s grip on the White House suddenly looked shaky. A new, youthful vanguard was trying to shake things up politically. This weekend repertory series, “Summer of ’68 Revisited,” offers two related documents from that protest-ridden season. Friday through Sunday, Haskell Wexler’s 1969 tear-gas vérité feature Medium Cool puts Robert Forster (he of Jackie Brown) in the middle of Chicago’s Democratic National Convention, where fact, fiction, documentary and a Hollywood love story all collide. On Saturday and Sunday only, Summer ’68is a more straightforward hour-long doc on the convention, which nominated Hubert Humphrey—the Dukakis of his day—as the lamb whom Richard Nixon and his “silent majority” would slaughter that fall. Some vintage TV ads and news segments will be screened with the latter. Yes, children, even without YouTube and the Internet, votes were still cast. Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Ave., 267-5380, www.nwfilmforum.org. $5–$8.50 (individual). 7 & 9:15 p.m. BRIAN MILLER
Fri., Aug. 22, 7 & 9:15 p.m., 2008
