Only three years after its 1991 debut in Austin, Texas, Greater Tunabecame the most-produced show in the nation. Could it have been because thousands of folks recognized themselves, or their crazy relatives, in the clever satire? Set in the fictional town of Tuna, Texas, where Patsy Cline is hailed as a goddess and the Lions Club deemed too liberal, Greater Tuna(weekends through August 23) is packed with affectionate jabs at rural America. The show calls for three actors to play more than 20 eccentric characters. Second Story’s hilarious resident actors Hayden Heibert, Robert Bogue, and Sean Mitchell have stepped up to the challenge. You’ll see all the staples: the town drunk/UFOlogist, a child followed by six to eight dogs at a time, and of course plenty of busybodies. This charming and mischievous take on small-town attitudes is well worth the price of gas to get across the lake. Remember that tax refund you got from Bush? He’d approve of your journey to Tuna—oddly enough, his parents are huge fans of the play. ERIKA HOBART Second Story Repertory Theatre, 16587 N.E. 74th St., Redmond, 425-881-6777, www.secondstoryrep.org. $19–25. Preview July 24, opens July 25. 8:15 p.m. Fri.-Sat., plus 2:15 p.m. Sun., Aug. 17. Ends Aug. 23.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8:15 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 17, 2:15 p.m. Starts: July 25. Continues through Aug. 23, 2008
