Please Ring Bell

Alicia, a model, supports herself on the pool’s edge, the light from her iPhone illuminating her face against the green glow of the underwater lights and the dark of night. She’s probably still so absorbed in Steve Jobs’ latest must-have that she doesn’t realize the photo she’s in may have won Evan Baden a cash prize. Baden is one of almost 500 photographers across the country who submitted photos to the Photographic Center Northwest’s annual competition and show, “Please Ring Bell” (through Aug. 28). Juror Rod Slemmons, director of Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography, has narrowed a field of more than 2,500 shots to include work from Baden and 24 other photographers. And while Slemmons gets the final say on who wins the big bucks (enough for a new lens!), it’s only American tradition to question officials’ calls. “Come on, it should’ve been Rachel Papo’s Ilya Backstage!” Photographic Center Northwest, 900 12th Ave., 720-7222, www.pcnw.org. Free. 9 a.m.–9:30 p.m.
