Foals at SP20

Sunday, July 13

When you’re going to make the deep and atmospheric kind of music English sweeties Foals do, it’s good to have a sense of humor about yourselves. These self-described “snotty art school drop outs hungry for the dollar” greet you on their Myspace page with the stoner phrase “wake and bake,” which serves as clue they aren’t going to be as gloomy as some of their art rock, post-punk brethren. What saves this year’s fabulous release Antidotes from being weighed down in Gothic muddledom is its keen exploration of toasty warm tones, psychedelia and smartly dancable beats. Quickly becoming UK near-legends for their untamed stage demeanor, manic fan appreciation, and guitars worn so high they make the Beatles’ playing postures look like Slash soloing, Foals are currently cresting as a tour de force live act. With only a handful of US dates this summer, their set alone is sure to make the trek to Marymoor well worth it.
