Our American Theater is a local company devoted to the great plays of the American canonworks by Thornton Wilder, Lillian Hellman, Arthur Miller, and other heavyweights. But since full productions often have budget-busting cast sizes and set requirements, O.A.T. has previously presented staged readings. Hence the companys first full production: Jon Robin Baitzs 1991 play Three Hotels (which ends Saturday, June 28). Its a single-set play with two actors giving alternating monologues. While the scale is modest, the plays ambitions are not: Baitz draws from experiences of his own family (his father worked for Carnation) to tell the story of a corporate executive (Todd Licea) and his wife (Lisa Carswell) after the baby formula hes so successfully sold to the Third World is implicated in waves of infant deaths. It would be nice to say that that play hasnt aged well. But, alas, when it comes to global food supplies, putting corporate profits ahead of public health isnt just for Africa anymorewould you like some extra tomatoes on your spinach salad?
