Red Lights

In Cédric Kahn's strange, suspenseful 2004 Red Lights, Jean-Pierre Darroussin plays a henpecked husband to Carole Bouquet. During the course of a quarrelsome road trip, she disappears. Kahn's film racks up unlikely coincidences (the most credulity-stretching one involving an escaped convict), yet Darroussin's downward spiral remains compelling. Some viewers may consider Bouquet 's fate a crude manipulation, an easy way to reverse her husband’s plight. In fact, it transforms the punch-drunk dark comedy that came before into sobering drama that's equally effective. (NR). NEAL SCHINDLER.
