hey Mike. Always nice to see some local musicians brought to the forefront. About shit my pants when I saw fred on the cover. I think if I hadn't given up music in the 70's for the family life, I would be looking alot like fred does now. After all these years, it's my goal to catch up with him. How am I doin?

Yep having worked D.T. for 15 yrs. u should check out ur surroundings....and working in the mtg. biz...yes stay a night and check out the area....well worth the bucks u spend in todays housing mkt...but all said....i enjoy my local dives...i have to get away from all the attitude every once in awhile...and just relax and have fun...shake that bootay...But this is bout Fred... and yes Fred you sound great because u play with all ur heart and soul...for us...making us happy!!! And that is what having fun is all bout....all of the guys who play for us in these bands....night in and night out...love of music...thank you all!!!!

You know, Jay Smith, I feel your pain but honestly, when you moved next door you should have done a little more research. Incidentally, I bet 90% of the aggravation you experience is a DIRECT result of the smoking ban that forced all of those noisy, smoky, butt chucking people out on the street in front of your open window. I'm sure those folks would much rather be warm inside with their noisy friends. I have a hunch that when you voted to ban smoking in bars you didn�t quite think it through did you?...but that's a topic for another day. Great story Mike�Right On!

Lisa J.-- I live right across the street from RimRock in the Luminaire condos, where I purchased 3 years ago. WHy? Because I couldn't afford to buy in my old neighborhood in Capitol Hill. Perhaps I was naive when I thought living here would be no problem--I embrace the eclectic nature of the neighborhood, but when residents complain of the noise, the urine in their doorways, the butts/bottles in the flower beds, enough is enough.We are good neighbors, but the bar patrons aren't. The bar owners are helpless to do anything but try to stay open and make a profit, while the neighbors suffer. It's too simplistic to just ask "WHY" I moved here. I've been to both bars--both times the few patrons I chatted w/were VERY drunk & I was hit on by a totally drunk/high female. These 'drinkin' man bars' are a far cry from Fiddler's Inn or Wedgewood Alehouse and serve a very limited demographic. No, I don't think we need to become the next Belltown or Ballard, but these places days are numbered if they continue to model themselves after the watering holes of their glory days.

Ericka: Thanks a ton for the link and kind words. Appreciate it. One thing: as for my "outsider" status, I spent my first 3 years there (a stone's throw from Nathan Hale HS & Rick's), and my next 15 in Wegwood, so my perspective, if not an insider's, comes with more than a smattering of street level experience, as Lake City was my "downtown" growing up.

I agree with Jay Smith. Most Lake City residents would like to see the seedy side (dive bars, Ricks and all the car dealers) leave Lake City. Lake City has more than its share of seedy and then gets all the low income housing and no infrastructure. Most residents yearn for brew pubs (not "martini bars") where normal people who live in Lake City can hang out. And, Lisa J, people live here because they make normal incomes and have families and cannot afford to live in other neighborhoods.

Freddy Is a Friend to a lot of us,as well as all the Bands he Plays in. The Rim Rock has been a Great Stomping Ground for Years & Great Food. I miss the Fun Times. Come up to B-ham sometime Guy,s. Amo.

Great article! Thanks for highlighting the importance of musical diversity in Seattle. I am grateful that Seattle is on the cutting edge of indie-rock, but there are many other scenes in this town that deserve to be recognized!

That was a great article, and truly captured the essence of Fred, and the good time bar scene. I jammed with him many times in the bars of Snohomish County in the 80's, and he was ALWAYS right ON!
Most of us have settled down with kids and mortgages, and I wouldn't trade a thing, but it is really inspirational to see a tribute to a guy that still rocks, the hard way. Don't think I could keep up with the likes of him, and probably shouldn't, but it sure brought a smile to my face as wide as Fred's, rememberin' those Glory Days!

Mr. Jay Smith, I'm very curious about something. If you're not happy with these so-called dive bars and drunks driving down your alley, why do you live there? You do realize that ANY neighborhood in this city could have these kinds of problems. And why just the dive bars, as you call them? People can get just as drunk in a fine dining establishment. Have you been to these places? I personally find dive bars much more comfortable than these snooty martini bars. And I don't even drink. From the bartender to the patrons, they make you feel at home. Neighborhoods don't want to lpse these places, they cherish them and what they stand for.

I'm thrilled to see Boys of Summer back in the repertoire. I actually saw the post-John Davanos stumble through it once at my behest, but I to give 'em a Mulligan b/c I goaded them into it f/the audience. Great to see they've stuck with it, and have found a way to get that vocal part right. Right on, indeed.

Holly did perform "Boys of Summer" last night with the guys. She was great. The Davanos were great even with Jerry's bad pipes. Lots of musicians in the audience too. Chris Yates, who shared the stage with Freddy for 8 years, was there. Several others too. Great article. As Freddy would say, "Right On!"

Great article--it captures the quirkyness of Lake City and the growing pains this 'urban village' is experiencing. We live with the drunks who pee in our flower beds, drive drunk down our alley, and generally disrupt the neighborhood.... There's little virtue in keeping some of these "legendary" Lake City icons around when they outlive their usefullness. I'm personally waiting for these dive bars fade away. Those who yearn for the 'good 'ol days' can find some other jaunt to go get drunk in and be disruptive somewhere else.
