Graffiti Rock with Grynch

Saturday, April 19

The last decade of hip-hop artists has proven that yes, white boys can rap too. Once a hot commodity, the genre has lost its progressive edge. But Ballard’s Grynch (John Overlie) managed to carve out his space before it lost momentum entirely. Lyrically complex and sensitive, the 21-year-old’s work showcases a savvy self-awareness more typical of veteran rappers. Proving he has the prose to back up the pose, this emcee possesses enough legitimate skill that he need not rely on a trend or fear its expiration date. With Clam Hammer and more. Sunset Tavern, 5433 Ballard Ave. N.W., 784-4880. 10 p.m. $5. ERIKA HOBART
Sat., April 19, 10 p.m., 2008
