The Last Polar Bear

Photographer Steven Kazlowski is conducing a series of slide-show presentations before the Burke Museum exhibit opens June 28 in conjunction with his book The Last Polar Bear: Facing the Truth of a Warming World (Braided River, $39.95). The publisher is actually a division of local Mountaineers Books, which is clearly hoping to repeat the eco-political success of Subhankar Banerjee’s Seasons of Life and Land, which documented the threatened Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Similarly, local lensman Kazlowski spent eight seasons in the Arctic to profile its top predator, whose numbers are dwindling, according to hard science, owing to the disappearing ice pack. And again, global warming is to blame. BRIAN MILLER.
