Sister Carol

Sunday, March 23

Call her "Black Cinderella" or "Mother Culture," or, as she suggests

on her 1994 release, you can just Call Me Sister Carol. Then again, on

the title track, she does refer to herself as "the original Rasta

woman," so perhaps we should just name her after the TV show Alias.

After all, besides a singjaying style that leans heavily on heavy

subjects—social justice, feminism, etc.—Sister Carol has done some

acting, too, most notably in a pair of Jonathan Demme flicks

(Something Wild and Married to the Mob). But you won't be on hand

tonight to witness her acting chops—you'll be here to witness the

Jamaican-born reigning queen of the '70s dancehall scene spit hot

fire. With Selecta Raiford. KEVIN CAPP

Sun., March 23, 9 p.m., 2008
