Colette

To date, the world’s best-known Colette has been the early-20th-century French novelist whose adventuresome spirit and life of romantic entanglements informed her nearly 50 novels. Though not so scandalous herself, since the late ‘90s another Colette has been causing them (scandals) on dance floors around the world as house music’s best-known female DJ. Not only does she mastermind the pulsing, sultry brand of house on her artist albums (most recently Push and Hypnotized, which licensed the title track to The Devil Wears Prada), but she sings on top of her songs. Yes, the subject matter is often relationship-centric, and you can expect as many well-heeled women as gawking men at her gigs, but it’s no novelty act. This Chicagoan paved the way for mass recognition of the female force in her city’s electronic music scene, along with DJs Dayhota, Lady D., and Heather; and as a longtime artist on the Om label, her releases have benefited from their sunny stamp of quality.
