Chilly Hilly Ride

Thousands of cyclists terrorize placid community!

When did these biking tights get so, well, tight? Maybe you’ve put on a few pounds since you stowed your Bianchi in the garage last autumn, and that’s why the 36th Chilly Hilly ride around B.I. is an untimed event, not a race. You can start whenever you damn well please, though the course opens at 8 a.m. (with volunteers and snack vendors lining the route). After you take the Winslow ferry from the Coleman Dock and fuel up on Clif Bars (the event’s new sponsor), you can pedal 33 miles while climbing a cumulative 2,675 feet. That’s a lot of calories to burn. And remember: If it’s cold and wet that morning, you’ll burn even more calories trying to keep warm. Registration on Seattle side includes ferry ticket. See the Cascade Bicycle Club’s Web site for further info, including ferry schedule. Coleman Dock/Bainbridge Island Cycle Shop, 162 Bjune Dr. S.E. (Winslow), 522-3222, www.cascade.org. $22-$27. 8 a.m. BRIAN MILLER
