Chocolate for Choice

A fundraiser on the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade

We don’t have a Democrat in the White House yet, ladies, and the good ol’ boy that’s there right now has done a bang-up job of eroding abortion rights, particularly for poor women in rural areas. While the stereotypically girlie concept of using chocolate as an incentive for feminist fundraising has always rubbed me the wrong way (Slow-Roasted Brisket For Choice? I’m so there!), NARAL’s 17th annual Chocolate for Choice event is as important as a morale booster for the pro-choice movement as much as it’s about raising money. Plus, the VIP judges of Seattle’s best chocolatiers this year include charismatic former congressional candidate Darcy Burner, brash political blogger David Goldstein, and Aurora Medical Services owner Deborah Oyer, a woman who is easily one of the most intelligent, funny, and passionate champions for choice in the country. First Base Terrace Club at Safeco Field, 1250 First Ave. S., 624-1990. www.prochoicewashington.org/events/choco4choice.shtml. $35, packages from $70-$350 include take-home chocolates. VIP reception: 6 p.m. Main event: 7-9 p.m.HANNAH LEVIN
