Ray Allen returns to Key Arena

With the promise of adding college player of the year Kevin Durant to its roster, Draft Day 2007 was supposed to be one of unbridled celebration for the Seattle Supersonics and its fans. Yet thanks to one unexpected maneuver—the trade of Ray Allen to the Boston Celtics for the rights to Georgetown star Jeff Green, Wally Szczerbiak, and Delonte West—the extravaganza resulted in as many jeers as cheers. So, how’s it worked out for everyone? Well, thanks to Boston’s subsequent addition of seven-foot superfreak Kevin Garnett, the Celtics have gone from being one of the league’s worst teams to one of its best. The Sonics, who also parted ways with Rashard Lewis, have gone from being one of the league’s worst teams to being one of the league’s worst teams. Yet thanks to spurts of brilliance by both Durant and Green, both of whom are sure to make the league’s all-rookie team, the future looks considerably brighter in Seattle—that is, if the team stays put.
