Bremerton's Serving “Papa Boner's Pizza”

I Pity the Foo who eats the whole thing.

By Mike Seely

Published on December 12, 2007

Despite its pristine Puget Sound setting and slowly revitalizing waterfront district, Bremerton remains a blue-collar Navy town, the undereducated older brother of boho Bainbridge. But this being the home of the all-female AC/DC cover band Hell's Belles, Bremerton distinguishes itself from its Kitsap kin with a surprisingly rambunctious music scene, anchored by two Croc-sized venues, the Manette and the scruffier Winterland. Unlike the Croc, Winterland serves food until closing time—its signature dish being, I shit you not, "Papa Boners Fire Grilled Pizza," a panini-pressed concoction that is exactly as appetizing as it sounds. Located across the street from a restaurant that had to have been a Taco Bell at one time, the club regularly books the aforementioned Belles, as well as highly respected Seattle acts such as Carrie Akre. Yet on a recent Friday, Winterland featured a Foo Fighters cover band called I Pity the Foo, featuring Weekly Web editor and Bremerton resident Chris Kornelis on drums. (I Pity the Foo opening for Hell's Belles would be quite the ticket.) Attracted by a lineup rounded out by three of Kornelis' former cronies at the Kitsap Sun, the crowd was more bookish than you're likely to find at Winterland on a given night, but lubed up enough on Vitamin R to approximate the norm. 1220 Sylvan Way, Bremerton, 360-479-5686.
