Trash Fashion Bash

One person’s gum wrapper is another’s couture

While watching Fashion Week runway shows or flipping through the pages of Vogue, does the thought “Who in the hell would ever wear that garbage??” ever cross your mind? Seeing models’ coat-hanger frames draped with ridiculous creations that wouldn’t ever fly on the street is tough to take seriously. But at the International Sustainability Institute’s annual Trash Fashion Bash it’s a whole lot tougher—and that’s just the point. Local celebrity models strut down the catwalk at SAM, decked out in haute couture created from actual trash—a reminder of the excessive waste that goes into our landfills, especially during the consumption-heavy holiday season. Pizza box bandeau tops and strapless rice sack gowns might seem silly, but the message that’s driven home is worthwhile: be more conscious of what so easily gets tossed under the sink. Plus, why give a Macy’s gift card this year when you could throw together a pair of slippers from empty Ben and Jerry’s cartons?
