“He could be saying anything at all, but whatever it is, it makes girls drop their panties,” a friend once claimed about bossa nova god João Gilberto. In fact, Gilberto was saying sexy things, but the point is that it simply makes you feel sexy to listen to his whisper-soft Portuguese. Twenty-four-year-old CéU (“Sayou”) is often compared to Gilberto’s daughter Bebel, who combined the samba and electronic music years ago, as the younger chanteuse does now. CéU’s easy rhythms pull from soul and R&B, too, and earned her a Latin Grammy nomination on her debut album. There’s nothing revolutionary about her sound, but her own dreamy lilt works classic magic.
